The short version. Fix the finished size and the stretcher bar depth, check the resolution across front plus wrap, crop for the visible front, choose how the sides get filled, add the edge extension on all four sides, then export with markers and an embedded ICC profile. The order is not optional: everything after step one is calculated from the size and bar depth you settled on.
The part that catches people out is that a canvas print is not a rectangle. It is a rectangle plus a border that disappears around the sides, and the file has to contain both. Send a printer a photo cropped to the front size and there is nothing left to wrap. That single misunderstanding accounts for most reprints.
Step 1: Fix the finished size and the bar depth
Two numbers come before everything else: the visible front dimensions, and how deep the stretcher bar is. A 60 × 80 cm canvas on a 2 cm bar and the same canvas on a 4 cm bar are different print files, because the deeper bar swallows more image on every side.
Common bar depths and what they are called in the trade:

Settle this with the customer before you touch the file. Changing bar depth later invalidates the crop, the resolution check and the edge extension all at once.
Step 2: Check the resolution across front plus wrap
Here is the mistake that survives even in professional workflows: people divide pixels by the front size and read off a comfortable DPI. But the printer lays ink on the whole sheet, wrap included.
Take a 60 × 80 cm front on a 4 cm bar with 2 cm overlap. Each side needs about 6 cm, so the printed sheet is roughly 72 × 92 cm. Measured on the front you might see a reassuring 150 DPI; measured on the sheet it is closer to 125. Not fatal on canvas, but it is not what you thought you had, and on a tighter file it is the difference between crisp and soft.

Step 3: Crop for the front face
Compose for what will be visible on the wall, then remember that a band around that composition is about to fold out of sight. Anything you care about needs clearance from the border: a horizon that sits exactly at the edge, a hand, a signature, the top of someone's head.
Portraits are where this bites hardest. Crop as you would for a print on paper and a gallery wrap will take a slice off the shoulders. Either leave more room in the crop, or pick a wrap method in the next step that adds material instead of consuming it.
Step 4: Pick the wrap method
The side faces have to show something. There are five ways to fill them, and the subject decides which one is right.

Step 5: Add the edge extension
This is the arithmetic that turns a photo into a print file. Every side gets bar depth plus the overlap that will be stapled onto the back.

Too little overlap and there is nothing to grip when the canvas goes on the bar, so the staples pull through the print area or the piece cannot be tensioned properly. Too much is merely wasted material and ink. Around 2 to 3 cm is the working range for a gallery bar.
One detail worth building into the habit: if the piece will be split across several panels, the edge extension applies to every panel, not just the outer edges of the whole composition. That is covered in triptych and multi-panel splitting.
Step 6: Markers, colour and export
The last step is where files quietly go wrong between your screen and the printer.
- Fold and cut markers. If stretching is done by hand, thin marks at the fold line and the cut line save guessing on the bench. Print them into the wrap area where they end up hidden on the back.
- Colour space. Work and export in the source space, sRGB or Adobe RGB, and embed the ICC profile. Do not convert to CMYK unless the printer explicitly asks. Large-format machines run more than four inks and their RIP converts with a profile built for that exact canvas and inkset, which beats any generic conversion you can do beforehand.
- Format. A 16-bit TIFF survives the RIP without recompression and is the safe choice for production. A high-quality JPEG is fine for most jobs and a fraction of the size.
- DPI metadata. Set it to the value the sheet actually is. A file with the right pixels and a wrong DPI tag invites the RIP or the operator to scale it.
- Back margin. If you brand the back with a logo or an edge label, keep it clear of the staple zone or it disappears under the fold.

None of this is difficult. It is just six calculations and a set of canvas operations repeated identically for every order, which is exactly the kind of work that goes wrong when it is done manually at eleven at night before a delivery.
